Re: Presidential Search Update

Dear UF Family and Friends:
Welcome back for the fall 2014 semester, students, faculty and staff. As chair of the Presidential Search Committee, I am excited about the new academic year and want to update all of you on the search for the next president of University of Florida.

Spring and Summer Activities

The Search Committee and full Board of Trustees accomplished two fundamental requirements for the search at the end of the spring 2014 semester and over the summer. At the end of the spring, with input from UF stakeholders, we approved search criteria, recognizing the importance of our president having a distinguished academic career—as well as other experience and capabilities—to lead our great university forward on its path to preeminence. Over the summer, the Search Committee and Board also obtained and approved an opinion of international compensation expert Mercer on the range of market compensation of peer Association of American Universities (AAU) institution presidents as a basis for establishing total compensation for the next UF president. Actual compensation will depend on the particular individual’s circumstances and qualifications. The Search Committee also favorably reviewed a marketing plan. Throughout the summer, search consultant Jan Greenwood and I reached out broadly to the academic research community. There is much interest in UF, and I am very optimistic that we will have a successful search.

Your Input Is Needed By Friday, August 29th

At the start of our search for UF’s next president, we mentioned there would be various opportunities for engagement throughout the search process. We have reached another point when we need your valuable input.
The Search Committee did not want to get too far in the search process during the summer break, when some in the UF community are off campus or on vacation. While it is too early to have candidates or to schedule campus interviews—and we do not yet know when that will happen—it is now time to begin developing a framework for the campus visits later in the process. Once we develop a pool of qualified candidates, the on-campus review and interview process will happen very quickly, and we need to be ready. For that reason, I am asking for your input on potential subjects for candidate questions tied to the search criteria that could be asked during campus forums and at Search Committee interviews when the time comes.
The university community provided extensive comments on questions for forums less than two years ago during the 2012 search process. Now, we want to invite your additional input, particularly reflecting important developments since 2012 – UF’s official designation as the state’s foremost preeminent research university and UF’s goal to become a top-10 public research university nationally. In 2014, the state economy is doing better and UF is building for the future.

Considering the search criteria and UF’s preeminence designation and goals, please give the Presidential Search Committee your answers to the following two questions by Friday, August 29th:

(1) What existing (2012) questions are about themes/subjects that are no longer of high interest?


(2) Are there any missing important themes/subjects from a preeminence perspective?

On the website,, under the “Community Input” tab, you will find an overview of the robust process to develop themes for questions in 2012; the 2012 questions; and our current search criteria. You will also find a web form to use to directly answer these questions.

September 5th Search Committee Meeting

The full Search Committee will meet September 5th to review and consider your submissions as it develops questions for campus forums and interviews. All meetings will be live-streamed and archived.

I will keep you informed with regular updates as we continue the search, and you can also follow along on the President Search website. The September 5th meeting notices and live-stream connection information will soon be posted.
